Read Aloud: A Text to Speech Voice Reader by LSD Software

by SomeAB, 2 years agoTL:DR - I personally find MS Zira voice with 75% speed, 100% pitch, to be good enough for most scenarios. Default settings sound horrible, but can be tweaked, that is what I mean.
Okay overall with all things considered, this is currently among the most easy to use TTS (Text to Speech) addons
Pros:
- Easy to use, works fine with a google translated page, easily identifies what you want to read
- You can use Google Wavenet, Amazon Polly & IBM Watson voices with it, if you have API access (all 3 of them have a free tier)
- Has a dark background pop-up that shows the text in a simple readable format alongside speech
Cons:
- Biggest con is that it doesn't use the new Microsoft voices that come with Windows Narrator. It only uses the old Zira, Adam, voices which are of lower quality.
- No way to add a custom Offline voice model. The option of 'Custom Voice is for the online APIs'
- I heard somewhere, that even in offline mode, it does uses some google apis, but haven't checked myself. Given it is recommended by Mozilla officially, I guess its alright for non-security scenarios.

I WANT TO LISTEN TO ANDREW'S VOICE DAMMIT (seriously, his TTS voice is really nice on the ears, you'll find it in Narrator settings as a "Natural" voice)

- Rated 2 out of 5by BoxFolve, 10 days agoKeeps skipping sentences - Very annoying. The standard voice sound like a choking tin frog. The AI voices are substantially better. But why is it skipping sentences?
- Rated 5 out of 5by Didactic Traveller, 23 days agoJust want to counter the people rating one star and saying there's only awful voices. There are really good ones, particularly supertonic. Just download them in the settings and activate them. Seriously, try opening the settings before review bombing.
Moreover, the native PDF support is quite good. PDFs can cause trouble with this sort of software, yet it works great here. - Rated 5 out of 5by d4nchq, a month agoIt's awesome, you can use different voices for TTS and can setup useful shortcut to run it.
- Rated 1 out of 5by Zero, a month agoThis extension was great! I have problems seeing font on dark websites because there isn't a light mode toggle on some of them. So, I use to use this to read what was posted. However, I was going to use it again today, it now asks for permission for all open url data when before it just did what it was meant to do. No thank you to that. It'd be great if it returned back to what it originally did.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Wizsensei, a month agoVery good. Only problem when i try in normal page it very slow loading or sometimes doesnt load at all. To fix this i open extension options and click test button. When test sound plays(which is very fast) then extension becames responsive and i can play other page i want without waiting or problem.
- Rated 1 out of 5by Mel, a month agoThe voice volume was so low I could not understand what it was reading. It was so low because the voice sound was coming through my Mac Mini M4 built in speakers and I was about 15 feet distant. There is no apparent means of choosing where the sound output goes.
